Special Gyms Guide: Lopsided Builds for Faster Stat Gains in Torn
This guide is built around steady energy training, and its main goal is to get you using Torn's special gyms. The core idea is simple: by deliberately running a lopsided build, you unlock high-efficiency gyms that let you gain stats faster than a balanced player of the same total.
You can adapt the exact build to your own preferences, but the structure below is what makes the special gyms work. Pick a direction early, because once you commit it is hard to change course.
Step 1 — pick your build
First, choose one stat to push far ahead of the others (your lead stat) and one stat to leave behind for a long time (you will train it eventually — see the notes at the end). To benefit from two special gyms at once, you must use one of these four pairings:
Lead Defence, leave Dexterity
Strength and Speed sit in the middle.
Lead Dexterity, leave Defence
Strength and Speed sit in the middle.
Lead Strength, leave Speed
Defence and Dexterity sit in the middle.
Lead Speed, leave Strength
Defence and Dexterity sit in the middle.
Your target ratio
Using the popular Defence lead as the example, aim to keep your stats inside this band as you train. The ratio is Defence : Strength : Speed : Dexterity.
| Bound | DEF | STR | SPD | DEX |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1.25 | 1 | 1 | 0 |
| Maximum | 1.5 | 1 | 1 | 0 |
Step 2 — match your training to your stat range
Before you worry about items, make sure you can fund the basics. If seeing numbers in the millions is daunting, focus on money-making first — a few million a day from flying or trading is enough to start. The right routine depends on where your highest stat sits (excluding the stat you are leaving behind).
Under 200k in a single stat
These are starting numbers — time to build them up with happy jumps. If you cannot afford jumps yet, at least keep your drug cooldown running. Cannabis is cheap, gives a little nerve, and introduces you to Torn's drug system. Also start exchanging points for a daily energy refill: it looks expensive at first, but it is the cheapest form of energy you can buy, so refill the moment you can afford it.
Over 200k in a single stat
You should be refilling, and it is time for Xanax. The baseline routine is 3 Xanax, 1 refill, and all the natural energy you can spend. This is the minimum for meaningful gains — almost everyone near the top of the battle-stat ranks is already doing it, so it is your bread-and-butter effort, not an advantage.
How the ratio scales
As your lead stat grows, your supporting stats should grow alongside it while the abandoned stat stays near zero. For a Defence lead, the progression looks like this:
| DEF | STR | SPD | DEX |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12,500 | 10,000 | 10,000 | 20 |
| 50,000 | 37,500 | 37,500 | 20 |
| 100,000 | 75,000 | 75,000 | 20 |
| 200,000 | 150,000 | 150,000 | 20 |
| 500,000 | 375,000 | 375,000 | 20 |
| 1,000,000 | 750,000 | 750,000 | 20 |
| 10,000,000 | 7,500,000 | 7,500,000 | 20 |
| 100,000,000 | 75,000,000 | 75,000,000 | 20 |
What to spend your money on
To run this build efficiently, prioritise your game money on the following:
Donator status
Unlocks the extras that make daily training smoother.
Points for an energy refill
The cheapest energy conversion in the game — refill daily.
Xanax
The backbone of your daily energy on top of refills and natural energy.
Private Island / Castle rental
High base happiness means bigger gains per energy.
Full armour gear
For the Defence modifier that helps you hit gym unlock requirements.
Unlocking every new gym
Each gym you open expands your training options.
The special gyms you are aiming for
The whole build exists to unlock these two high-energy gyms. Open the 25-energy gym first, then the 50-energy gym while keeping the 25-energy one available.
| Gym | Energy | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Frontline Fitness | 25e | Cha Cha's unlocked; Strength + Speed 25% higher than Dexterity + Defence |
| Mr. Isoyamas | 50e | George's unlocked; Defence 25% higher than your second-highest stat |
Step 3 — why a lopsided build wins
Here is the payoff. Two players with the same total stats — one lopsided, one balanced — will not gain at the same rate. With identical activity and Xanax use, the lopsided player training in special gyms gains more stats over time simply by maintaining the ratio. The gym system rewards specialisation, so do not fight it.
Extra ways to boost gains
Once the build is running, these stack on top for even faster progress:
Sync with your faction's steadfast upgrades
Strong factions can run gym-gain upgrades of 11% or more, but they rotate which stat is boosted. Train in sync with the rotation, and talk to your leader to understand the schedule — it also shows dedication.
Use a gym-gain job
Defence and Dexterity each have a company job that grants +10% gym gains. Roughly speaking, that is a full extra day of training for every ten days you train.
Work a Fitness Center
It gives +3% to all gym gains and uses less happiness per train — most noticeable when training with energy cans.
Save cans and FHC for training books
Energy cans and FHC are expensive. If you cannot use them constantly, save them for when you have a training book active to maximise their value.
Common mistakes to avoid
These errors quietly cost players huge amounts of progress:
Training without happiness
Training with no Private Island or little happiness wastes gains. Renting a PI is cheap relative to the gym benefit — it is not throwing money away.
Staying in a dead or self-owned faction
Join a real, active faction. If you want a company bank, run a company for profit — but train inside a proper faction with other members. Many high-respect factions still accept newer players.
Taking no drugs at all
Always do something with your drug cooldown. If happy jumps and Xanax feel expensive, chase drug merits or use cheaper options — even LSD gives 50 energy (with a high overdose risk).
What about your abandoned stat?
Eventually you may want to train that neglected bottom stat — there are merits tied to every stat. There is a perfect item for exactly this situation:
Book: Ignorance Is Bliss
Lets happiness regenerate above its maximum for 31 days. Once your lead build is huge, crack this book, stack up to 99,999 happiness, and for a full month every train behaves like a happy jump. Make sure you are in a gym-gain job to get the most out of it.
